TAAG Cargo Demonstrates Specialist Capability with Lion Transport Across Africa

Two adult lions, each weighing approximately 200 kilograms, have completed a carefully managed air journey from Johannesburg to Lagos through Luanda, demonstrating the specialist cargo capabilities of NAP airline partner TAAG Angola Airlines.

The animals were transported aboard a Boeing 737-800 freighter from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (NBJ) in Angola before continuing to Lagos, Nigeria.

The operation required extensive preparation, documentation, secure containment and continuous monitoring. Wildlife conservation specialists supervised the animals throughout the journey, ensuring their safety and compliance with the international requirements governing live animal transport.

Specialist cargo requires more than capacity

Transporting live animals is among the most demanding areas of air logistics. Success depends on precise coordination between airline teams, ground handlers, animal welfare specialists and authorities across every point in the journey.

TAAG’s successful execution demonstrates its ability to manage cargo requiring tailored handling and rigorous operational control. Beyond live animals, the airline’s Boeing 737-800 freighter supports general cargo, perishables, high-value shipments, industrial equipment and other specialised freight.

The operation also highlights the growing role of Luanda’s Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport as an African cargo transit hub. TAAG currently operates dedicated cargo services connecting Luanda with Lagos, Brazzaville, Abidjan, Accra, Kinshasa, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Lusaka, linking markets across Southern, Central, East and West Africa.

What this means for NAP members

For Neutral Air Partner members, this operation offers practical evidence of the specialist cargo capability available through NAP’s expanding airline partner portfolio.

TAAG provides access to dedicated African freighter capacity, regional connections through Luanda and operational experience in shipments that cannot be managed as standard freight. This creates further opportunities for NAP members handling live animals, perishables, valuable cargo, industrial equipment and other complex movements across the continent.

TAAG Angola Airlines joined the NAP airline partner portfolio in May 2026, strengthening the network’s airline relationships and cargo connectivity across Angola and key African markets.

The transportation of the two lions shows what specialised airfreight looks like in practice: detailed planning, the right aircraft, qualified handling and close coordination across borders.
