Founded in 1985 in Milan by brothers Carlo and Sandro Milani—who currently serve as administrators—Boxline began its journey as a maritime agency for full container services. Today, it stands as a leading European consolidator, but its recent triumph isn’t just in the water—it’s in the air.
A Maritime Legacy
For over 37 years, the Milani brothers have steered Boxline to become a formidable force in sea freight. With its headquarters in Milan and a network of eight European offices—spanning Italy, Slovenia, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Austria, Serbia, and the Czech Republic—the company has built a reputation for fast, reliable maritime solutions.
In 2018 alone, Boxline’s 150 employees managed over 65,000 shipments, totaling more than 350,000 cubic meters of Groupage goods. As a founding member of the Cargo World Network (CWN), Boxline provides shippers with access to over 22,000 interconnected ports through a single, neutral platform.
Learning the “Air DNA”
Despite this deep “Sea DNA,” Sandro Milani recognized that staying on “one leg” was uncomfortable in a volatile market. To build a second pillar in Air Freight, he turned to Neutral Air Partner (NAP).
“I joined NAP to learn about Air Freight,” Sandro admits with characteristic humility. “I came here without any knowledge… I’m a bad student, but still making step-by-step progress.”
This dedication to mastery led Boxline to win NAP’s Best Supporting Member Award, a recognition of their sky-high dedication to learning the complexities of the air cargo industry.
The NAP Difference: A Master’s Level Education
For Sandro, the partnership with NAP is distinct from other industry networks. While many groups simply facilitate business exchanges, Sandro views NAP as a source of “technical contribution” to the sector.
“The majority of networks today… just put together a group of forwarders, each one looking for the business of the other,” Sandro observes. “NAP provides technical contribution and information across different sectors. It’s a higher level. Let’s say it is a master’s program; the others are just a normal university.”
Human Solutions in a Digital Age
While Boxline embraces technology, Sandro remains a staunch advocate for human expertise. He warns that while automation improves productivity, it can often displace the experience and knowledge required for complex problem-solving.
“Many customers need people looking for solutions rather than being told to ‘go online and book,'”
he explains. This was proven during the Red Sea disruptions in early 2025, when Boxline’s rail service from China to Europe boomed because they offered a practical solution that bypassed the maritime crisis.
The Journey Continues
Boxline UCL continues to provide a range of neutral solutions across LCL, FCL, RAIL, and AIR. For Sandro Milani, the mission is never finished.
“In our industry, you never truly reach the end,” he says. “You walk, you walk, you walk, and the horizon keeps moving—but at least I’m moving forward.”
